Construction of a new copper smelter by KAZ Minerals, one of Kazakhstan’s largest industrial projects, has officially commenced in the Abai Region. The Kazakhstan Chamber of Mines took part in the ceremony attended by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The new complex in Aktogay represents an investment of $1.8 billion, an annual production capacity of 300,000 tonnes of cathode copper, and the creation of more than 1,000 new jobs. In addition to copper, the facility will produce gold, silver and sulphuric acid.

For the mining industry, this project represents much more than a new plant. The development of modern metallurgical capacity creates additional opportunities for mining and exploration companies, supports domestic processing and helps reduce dependence on external markets and geopolitical constraints.

It is particularly encouraging that other Chamber members are already involved in delivering this large-scale project. In particular, Interrin and Orica have been engaged in drilling and blasting operations, while Xcalibur is providing aerogeophysical services.

The Kazakhstan Chamber of Mines welcomes KAZ Minerals’ investment and the development of new processing facilities that strengthen the competitiveness of the entire industry — from exploration to the production of finished products.
